Fieldguide GPS

Student Project
Year: 2007

Handheld GPS units with only a top-down, topographic map display don't offer the most intuitive view of terrain. I wanted to take advantage of the developments being made in smartphones to design a powerful and easy to use mapping tool for novice adventurers.

As well a powerful chip capable of 3D graphics, my design included a gyroscope and accelerometer to allow the user to change perspective on the map simply by adjusting the angle. This reduces the need for excessive buttons and allows the device to be used in portrait or landscape mode
